SUPPORT AFTER TRAUMA:
Navigating the journey of rehabilitation after any injury can be quite the challenge. In the UK, we are fortunate that there are numerous charities who are dedicated to providing support to individuals and families during this difficult time. From practical support to community reintegration, this blog will do a surface dive into organisation’s which are committed to helping people rebuild their lives, after a life changing event. If you or someone you know is in need of support, reaching out to these charities can be a stepping stone towards recovery.
Here are some ways these wonderful organisation’s can support:
Practical support:
Many charities provide practical support, such as with transport to medical appointments, help with household tasks, deep cleaning and collecting medication. Charity support can vary borough by borough, therefore, speaking to your local healthcare team is the best in this case. This can be easiest early on in your recovery, when you or your loved one may still be in an inpatient setting.
The British Red Cross offers practical and emotional support, particularly when someone leaves hospitals. They also offer a reasonably priced wheelchair rental . At the time of writing, wheelchair hire for £22 a week with variable delivery and collection options available at £25.
Vocational Training:
Some charities aim at helping individuals through vocational training. Programs can include specific skills development workshops, placements and mentorship opportunities. The Prince’s Trust can help individuals aged 11 to 30 to build confidence, get a job or launch a business.
Financial support:
Navigating financial challenges after trauma can be daunting. Some charities such as Turn2us are able to provide quick and easy support with accessing benefits, grants and how to apply for PIP.
Shelter and food:
In times of immediate need, charities such as Crisis provide emergency support including shelter, food and access to healthcare for those facing acute distress and homelessness.
Counselling:
Charities such as Mind provide psychological therapy for people experiencing common mental health problems such as, mild to moderate depression and anxiety. At the time of writing, treatment may include individual 1:1 counselling sessions for between 6-12 weeks. Sessions normally start 4-12 weeks after an assessment. They have a self-referral system through their website.
Samaritans: The Samaritans are able to provide emotional support to people struggling to cope. This may be online, over the phone or in person.
Support groups:
Support groups can be invaluable when recovering from trauma. Peer support groups allow individuals and families to share their experiences, gain insights and build a community with others who understand their challenges. Your health professional team will be the best people to guide you to support groups that may be available in your local area, for your specific condition.
Brain injury:
Headway: Headway is the UK-wide charity that works to improve life after brain injury by providing vital support and information services.
Spinal cord injury:
Aspire: Aspire are also have to support with advisors such as on independent living, assistive technology and accessible housing.
Back Up Trust: The back up trust provide courses aimed to increase confidence and independence for people with a spinal cord injury, in a supportive environment. These courses range from city breaks to sporting weekends.
